Day 1

Arrived safely with enough juice to head out for a quick kite this afternoon at Kananaha Point. Classic, arrived to scope the beach and watched some poor sap get their kite wrapped in a tree. There are some tricky launch and landing spots, but overall this place is killer!

One of the cool things about this trip was watching a funky older surf movie, slightly cheezy, but I liked the vibe non the less. In this fictional tale an ego driven world champ surfer gets caught up in a contest at Sunset and starts to drown. He is then saved by non other than the Duke, (Kahanumoku) as he goes back in time. Now the cool thing about the movie is the original vibe of surfing, and the cool old boards that they made. It was this old school style of board that got me excited just before Christmas when my wife bought me a Palownia wood blank to shape my own Alaia. For those of you who don't know what an Alaia is, it is the original shaped style of board from the late 1800 to early 1900 hundreds. I shaped myself one during the Christmas break and I have been having so much fun with this on lightwind days. It embarks me on the age old journey of purity of spirit.
Since loaning this board to several of my friends they now want me to shape them one as well. It really is the embodiment of the aloha spirit.
The good part of the movie is that dude learns his lesson, goes back to his place in time, and feels the real love of what surfing is all about.....

Off to Kite Beach Maui!

Leaving today for Maui!

Heading to paradise to sit for the IKO instructor's course while taking a bit of time to  ride a few waves along the way. Heading out with long time local legend Alistair Waddell who will be one of my instructor's for the 2013/14 season. Should be a great time!
